Persoonlijkheidsstoornissen ontstaan als gevolg van een complexe wisselwerking tussen genetische factoren en omgevingsinvloeden. Interactie van vroege negatieve of traumatische levenservaringen met genetische factoren, kan leiden tot de ontwikkeling van een persoonlijkheidsstoornis. De borderline-persoonlijkheidsstoornis (PS) ontstaat als gevolg van een complexe interactie tussen genetische factoren en de omgevingsinvloeden. Vroege negatieve of traumatische levenservaringen interacteren met genetische factoren om zo een verstoorde emotionele ontwikkeling te veroorzaken. Deze emotionele verstoring uit zich in disfunctionele gedragingen, gedachten en gevoelens (Lieb et al. 2004Lieb, K, Zanarini, MC., Schmahl, C, Linehan, MM., Bohus, M, Borderline personality disorder.
